Weight Loss Detox
Most people undergo detoxification to cleanse their body of toxins, but some do so for a common offshoot of a detox diet: weight loss. The question, however, remains. Is it even healthy to regularly use detox programs as a weight loss regimen?
Viewed from any angle, any weight loss detox plan is a form of crash dieting. Practically all weight loss detox diets disallow the intake of any forms of solid food, with the exception of vegetables and fruits and sometimes fish. The emphasis is on drinking plenty of fluids, preferably water.
Now weight loss detox diets are good in the sense that they encourage a healthy way of eating by focusing on just fresh veggies and fruits. No one would argue with the fact that this kind of foodstuff is just perfect for a healthy way of life. However, detox diets have to end sometime, because our body still needs nutrients that we couldn’t just get from water, vegetables and fruits alone. We all need protein, so meat will always be on the menu for us. We all need carbs and a bit of fat, to provide us with energy to get us through our day-to-day activities. The point is, unless they become dedicated vegans, most people who lose weight through a weight loss detox plan tend to gain them all back when they start eating “normal” food again.
Any weight loss detox diet has a lot of benefits, but it poses some dangers too, especially when taken to extremes. One way of doing it in an extreme manner is by extending the detox period. Typically, a 48 hour detox is just enough, particularly for beginners. Some, however, decide to try the diet for weeks, or even months, on end. Doing this is not only foolish, but also dangerous.
All weight detox diets aside, the best way to lose weight is still achieved by making major lifestyle changes. Stick to a balanced diet plan and work out regularly. These do not only help you lose weight. It helps the body’s natural detox system do its job as well. Add getting adequate sleep and rest, performing stress relief routines like meditation or yoga, and quitting smoking and other substance abuse habits, and you have a surefire way of helping your natural detox system out.
