What is Detox?
Many of us have heard the word detox, or detoxification, being mentioned in conversations. We hear it on television or while listening to the radio; and we read the word in newspapers and other reading materials that advertise detox sessions. We also hear of detox clinics in almost every state in the country. However, not all of us really know what detox, or detoxification, really understand what it is about.
Detoxification is the process of removing toxic substances from a person’s body. In the earlier years, detox was mostly known as a treatment for people suffering from drug or alcohol dependence. Today, however, it is also known as a safe and effective means of removing dietary toxins from the body.
In cases where detox is used for alcohol rehabilitation, it is considered the initial step in the recovery process. There are detox or rehabilitation centers across the country that offer managed detoxification. There are others, though, who prefer to undergo the detox process outside of these centers. In cases like this, professional or medical advice is always needed, especially since this is normally done without expert supervision from a trained detox manager.
The detox process is not easy, especially if one is dealing with alcohol or drug dependence. The rehab patient normally undergoes several stages, the first of which is physical and mental withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms vary from person-to-person, and these normally depend on several factors, like the type and quantity of alcohol or drugs taken in and the over-all health condition of the person. There will be alcohol cravings, especially at the beginning of the process; but these cravings can be controlled by taking in recommended medication. Sedatives can also be taken in order to help the patient sleep. Eventually, as the process progresses, withdrawal symptoms lessen and there is less sweating, tremors, hallucinations and vomiting. This is one of the strongest reasons why detox should always be supervised by an expert or a trained specialist.
As earlier mentioned, detox can also refer to diet detoxification. A detox diet helps take away toxins in the body that are the result of eating the kinds of food. These toxins can destroy body tissues and may, over time, lead to serious health consequences.
Detoxifying diets can help a person stay away from illnesses brought about by too much toxins in the body. People who go on a detox diet become more energized, get clearer and healthier skin, improve his/her concentration and bowel movements, and help achieve better digestion.
Once a person experiences fatigue, muscle pains, sleeping problems and cough among others, he/she is advised to seek medical help so he/she can then begin his/her diet detox process.
Whatever reasons a person has for going through the detox process, it is all for his/her betterment and over-all health improvement. It may be a difficult process; but if taken as a challenge, it can lead to a better, healthier and more fit life.
